Scarlet Strands

they gather
beneath the warm spring sun
amongst the new blooms
the old guard
to raise a shilling
or two
for the new front
they talk of
hardy
gaitskell

they mumble
under their breath
of flinching cowards
sneering traitors
new reforms
lost ideals

sipping tea
from styrofoam cups
the laughter
that comes with wisdom
fills the air
cakes are auctioned
books
they’ve already read
are bought
raffle tickets drawn
old friends caught up with
and better days remembered
